Learning Jeli
How your Jeli speaks, and how it learns English.
A Jeli speaks Jeli and learns English gradually. The app doesn't translate it.
One level of fluency#
Fluency is a single level rather than a set of fixed voices. When your Jeli speaks it decides word by word whether it knows the English for that word yet, so sentences come out mixed. A juvenile saying it's hungry and wants to sleep:

What raises fluency#
Life stage. Each stage is a large step. See Life stages.
Affection. Hearts add on top. A well-looked-after adult speaks more English than a neglected one of the same age.
Which words it learns#
Which words it knows in English is fixed per word. A Jeli that says "hungry" but still says the Jeli word for sleep will keep saying the Jeli word for sleep until it learns it. The words you hear early are the ones you'll keep hearing.
By stage#
Egg. Noises only.
Hatchling. Mostly babble. Even the Jeli comes out mangled, with extra syllables, stutters and half-words.
Juvenile. Jeli sentences with English words among them. English words come out baby-shaped, so l becomes w and th becomes d.
Adult. Mostly English, with bent grammar and a core of Jeli words.
Words it always keeps#
Six words stay in Jeli at any fluency: love, food, me, you, hello, friend.
Your name is never translated or mangled.
