Sleep and rest
When your Jeli sleeps, what a night is worth, and what waking it costs.
Sleep is the only thing that restores rest.
It puts itself to bed#
Between 22:00 and 07:00, a tired Jeli goes to sleep on its own. You don't have to do anything, and you don't have to be there.
Both of these have to be true: it's inside those hours, and its rest has fallen far enough. A Jeli that is wide awake at midnight stays up until it gets tired.
Once asleep it stays asleep until morning, or until rest is full, whichever comes first. Tiredness decides whether it goes to bed, never whether it stays there.
Or you can tell it to#
The Sleep button works at any hour. So does turning your phone face-down and holding it there for a second. Either way it sleeps until you wake it.
What a night is worth#
| Rate | What that means | |
|---|---|---|
| Rest, awake | −6.25 an hour | sixteen waking hours from full to empty |
| Rest, asleep | +12.5 an hour | eight unbroken hours fills it from nothing |
| Food, asleep | ×0.4 | it still gets hungry, just slower |
| Fun, asleep | ×0.3 | |
| Clean, asleep | ×0.5 |
Waking it up costs you#
Starting a game without pressing Wake first is rude, and your Jeli knows. It loses fun, gets no toy bonus, and earns none of the goodwill ordinary play does.
Doing it repeatedly costs more than the sum of its parts. Three rude wakings inside three days costs half a heart, and recent ones drag on the mood band for as long as your Jeli remembers them.
A broken night is worth less than a whole one#
Every disturbance divides what's left of that night's recovery:
recovery ÷ (1 + 0.45 × disturbances)
Two disturbances make a night worth roughly half. That is the difference between sleeping and lying down repeatedly, and it's why a Jeli woken twice can be in bed for eight hours and still get up tired.
Disturbances reset with each new night. Last night's broken sleep doesn't follow it into tonight.
Sleep isn't in the care log#
Falling asleep and waking naturally are worked out from the clock rather than written down. Only the sleeping and waking you press are recorded.
The upshot is that your phone and your watch always agree about whether your Jeli is asleep, without syncing anything.
Nothing buzzes overnight#
No notifications between 22:00 and 07:00. The one exception is a Jeli that has died, which you should know about whatever the hour.
A Jeli will also never climb onto your screen over another app at night, even with that switched on.
